What is up my people, Will Mansour here with another Fireside Chat BLOG where every single week we give you valuable information to transform your life.
Today we have another amazing BLOG talking to you about Habits. Habits are a very important part of all of our lives. They shape our lives, and the lives of many successful people.
Habits are an interesting topic of discussion. These days everyone is talking about Habits. Books, podcasts, articles. James Clear in his book Atomic Habits says
A Habit is a routine or practice performed regularly, an automatic response to a specific situation.
By the way, if you have not read this book, I highly recommend reading it or listening to it on Audible. I personally have read it twice already and have listened to the audiobook once. Powerful stuff for sure.
The POWER of Habits!
Over the years there has been a lot of research done on Habits and how this “routine” we call it, shapes our identity and who we are.
Last year I decided to start making new Habits. I picked up The One Thing Book by Gary Keller, another outstanding book, and in there Gary speaks about the power of Time Blocking, which we will talk about in another episode, and if you can successfully
Time Block something for 66 days straight, it becomes a Habit.
This got me thinking. Now, Gary wasn’t speaking directly about anything pertaining to a specific business Time Block, he was speaking in general, however, this concept applies to everything in our lives!
Start Taking Notes!
Take a second and think about something you do that is a Habit. Something that you do everyday without thinking about it, something that is automatic?! There are many things that come to mind I am sure, some good and some bad, however, you are unconsciously doing these things daily without notice. So, after reading The One Thing, actually while reading, I decided to write down all my good Habits and all my bad Habits in my journal. People if you do not journal, I suggest starting. I actually have five different journals for different things. It’s amazing to journal every day, and that is an automatic Habit of mine!
Ok, so I am writing down my list of good and bad Habits in my journal and it was amazing to see the list. Then I went searching for accountability.
Accountability is something that is the foundation for anything you are trying to achieve. Whether its being accountable to yourself, your team or your family. Its massive in taking action.
I went onto the App store, I know right, and was looking for apps that would allow you to enter and track Habits. Basically, I was looking for a check mark list.
“Be Like Jerry“
Let me explain. Everyone knows the comedian Jerry Seinfeld and what Jerry does, and I believe he does it too this day, is tracking streaks through a calendar his wall. This calendar is his accountability tracker. He has a Habit of creating a new joke every day, it doesn’t matter if it’s good or bad, but he creates a new joke every day.
Once he creates that joke, he goes over to his calendar and puts an X or a checkmark on that day.
What he is doing is being accountable to creating a new joke that day, however, he is also creating a streak! Streaks are very important when creating new Habits as you want to do this new Habit for 66 days straight.
Accountability Trackers – The DONE App
Back to the App store, so I came across this app called Done, and by the way there was a ton of apps for Habit tracking. Done was the one that worked for me. You can go in, create your habits and when you are done that habit for the day, you tap it and it fills with colour and it tracks the amount of days in a row you have Done the Habit, the Streak! If you don’t tap the screen for that habit that day it resets to zero. Now, in the back end you can modify and create all of this, so for example, say you want to do something 5 of 7 days a week, then you can create that in the back end. Something like working out for example. I use it, it works for me, you can also create accountability groups with your friends and colleagues as well for Habit creation and deletion.
Here are some of the Habits I wrote down in my journal and have successfully implemented into my life and schedule to this day, which were not present last year before July 2019.
- Waking up at 5am
- Mental Fitness – Reading
- 16/8 Intermittent Fasting
- No Alcohol
- Keto Dieting
- Flossing Teeth
- Physical Fitness
Own Your Excuses, Don’t Let Them Own You!
Now, how many of us, I say us, because I have been a victim of this, have said the good old new year’s resolution throughout the course of the year at any given time? You know what I am taking about. I am going to party like there is no tomorrow and on MONDAY I am going to start working out, eating right, blah blah blah, and when Monday comes you do workout and eat right and by Friday you are off the wagon again and starting over on MONDAY! Hilarious right? Victim, right? Yeah same over here. My point is, by setting unrealistic goals for Habit Creation we are setting ourselves up for failure.
My advice is this, pick One Thing, ONE HABIT, and focus on that one Habit.
The more you put on your plate the more you are susceptible to failure. This is for us that fall victim to failure due to not managing our expectations well and putting too much on our plates at one time.
Habit Stacking, It Works!
Now, once you get into this Habit of creating Habits you can add numerous Habits together at the same time. This is called Habit Stacking. So, for example, you could stack waking up at 5am, working out, meditation, and mental fitness in a block. These four Habits, great Habits by the way, you could do in succession or however you want to do them. I don’t recommend doing this all at the same time, maybe try two and build up to four or even six.
I am going to leave you with some homework. Take a minute and write down your top five Habits you want for your life and the top five Habits you want to remove from your life. Find a way to generate accountability to achieve those Habits, whether it be your spouse, a friend, a colleague, a calendar or an APP. Start tracking your Habit and creating streaks! Streaks are powerful and can create accountability itself.
I would like to hear your progress on and what your Habits are. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions you have regarding Habits. If there is anything I can do to help you I would be grateful to assist.

Rob Collier said it best when he said “Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out” By doing One Thing every day and by improving by 1% every day that will make you 37% better at the end of the year. What is One Thing you could do starting today, that by doing just a small percentage of it will compound to 37% at a minimum after one year?
