What is up my people, Will Mansour here with another Fireside Chat BLOG where every single week we give you valuable information to transform your life.
Today we have another amazing BLOG talking to you about the power of a Goal Setting and Systems. Goal Setting is a massive part of my life and the lives of many successful people. There have been countless books, seminars, and events based on Goal Setting for decades! So, let’s get started!!!
What is a Goal? I have always had goals. Ever since I was a kid playing hockey. I had Goals for how many goals I was going to score in a season, to how many assists, to how many points.
Goal Setting at a young age set the tone for who I am today and how I set Goals. I am always looking for ways to improve my Goal Setting on a daily basis. I have come up with a few changes over the years and thought it would be great to share them with you.
Since setting individual Personal Goals as a young hockey player, I have grown to understand the power of Goal Setting and how it can positively change your life especially if you believe they must change your life.
Over the years, and after listening to countless self-education podcasts, reading books, doing seminar after seminar, I have developed my own personal strategy for Goal Setting, and it works, for me anyway.
What is a Goal?
First you must have a Goal. Goals are something you create which have multiple end dates, some are longer than others, but when I say multiple, I mean you can create a Goal, achieve the Goal, first end date, and then build on that Goal, second end date, and so on.
Set MASSIVE Goals!
You must have Massive Goals. People often make the mistake of setting very realistic Goals. This is your first mistake in my opinion. Reach for the stars with your Goals. Don’t be afraid to set a Goal, which you think is unrealistic to achieve.
You will be surprised at what you are capable of as a person. Too many times people set these easy to attain Goals for themselves.
Create Goals that are far out there, within reason. Setting a Financial Goal of earning 10M a year is probably not going to happen right away but setting a Financial Goal of earning 500K a year is more attainable.
Write Your Goals Down…Everyday!
Write your Goals down on paper, every day. I know this sounds like a pain in the ass, however, it works. I have been reviewing and writing my Goals down on paper for years. I have even heard of some successful people writing them down before they go to bed each night and again when they wake up in the morning.
The point here is this, if you are constantly writing down your Goals you are reinforcing them to yourself one to two times a day.
The result of this is you become obsessed with the attainment of them.
Record And Listen To Your Goals!
After writing down your Goals, go into your smart phone, open up the voice memo’s app, every smartphone has one and you’re doesn’t then there are a ton you can download from the app store and
Record your Goals into a voice memo. I do this all the time. It allows me to listen to my Goals any time I want. I also name and date the recording.
What’s interesting is, after doing this for a while you can go back and listen to previous recordings to see how small minded you previously were. I am telling you it’s hilarious to listen back to see what Goals you set for yourself. Think BIG People.
What’s The Plan? What’s The System?
Now that we have our Goals written down and we are also listening to them at will, the most important aspect to setting any Goal is to develop the system for those goals.
Without any system to achieve your Goals your goals are just copy on paper. They don’t really mean anything.
I once listened to a Goal setting workshop by Tony Robbins and the advice he gave in that workshop was to never leave the site of a Goal without doing anything to achieve it. Meaning, once you create a Goal to say, workout every day, then after you set that Goal do something to achieve it. In this case I am suggesting creating systems to achieve your Goals. Your Goals will only survive if you have systems in place to achieve them!
Categorize Your Goals!
There are many types of Goals you can define. I like to identify mine into three different categories, Personal, Material, and Financial.
I find the best way to be successful with your Goals is to write down as many Goals as you can for each category and pick the top three Goals from each.
So essentially you are working with nine total Goals. Once you have these Goals established, start immediately creating the systems to achieve these Goals.
Celebrate Your Success…Always!
Once you have achieved your Goal you should also create a celebration around it. Examples are buying a new car, taking a trip somewhere or going to your favourite restaurant and buying the most expensive bottle of wine on the menu! Something to strive for. This is important.
Create a VISION BOARD
I always keep a board up in my office which has colour photos of the material Goals I would love to have. These are things such as cars, properties, vacations, etc.
This vision board is also a great way to remind yourself daily of your Goals.
You can also print out and put words related to your Goals on this vision board as well. It works and is always right in front of you when you are working, prospecting, etc.
Schedule Progress & Review, Time Block This!
Set dates to review your Goal progress in your calendar. You can review these monthly, or quarterly. I personally like to review mine quarterly. I assign set dates in my calendar and typically time-block these for an hour. During this time I will refine the systems in place and change anything that is not working.
It is also important to note that I keep a journal to document the ups and downs for all the Goals and systems I have created.
This is important to have when reviewing your Goals during those scheduled time-blocks.
Accountability is number 10 on the list, however, it is number one. Being accountable is the major factor in Goal achievement, after you have developed your systems. There are many ways to be accountable.
You can post your Goals on social media, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn. You can start a Goal setting group on social media such as Facebook. Here you can all post your Goals into the group as well as your recordings and reviews.
It is also a great place to discuss the ups and downs. Knowledge is Power so why not share it. I suggest though, if you are going to do this to make sure the group is a closed group. With the onset of COVID-19, many people are resorting to video calls. Zoom is a great platform I use to communicate with people in my industry all over North America. You can also do the same with Goal Setting accountability. With your defined group, set up weekly half hour calls to discuss your Goals, what you have been doing to get to the end date, what has been working and what has not been working. You can even document this and show your work to the group. This is very power stuff and will drive you to follow through on your systems.
I am going to leave you with some homework. Take a minute and write down all of your Personal, Financial and Thing Goals. Make a long list. Once you are done with this, pick the top three from each category and make them your Goals. Develop Systems to achieve these Goals, the plan of attack and do something towards setting these goals right away! This is your homework!
I would like to hear your progress on and what your Goals are. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions you have regarding Habits. If there is anything I can do to help you I would be grateful to assist.
